Jason is a struggling writer on the verge of giving up. But his life is turned upside down when Anders, his troubled friend, arrives on his doorstep seeking his help to fight demons.

Jason desperately wants to help his friend, but doesn’t want to enable Anders’ delusions. Still, the two eventually set out on a road trip where Jason is finally forced to confront the demons of his past, and also the demons preying on a secretive family.

Born Again is a horror novella about the lengths we’ll go to support our friends, and how we’ll do anything to keep those relationships alive.

Sometimes that means keeping secrets.

Sometimes that means doing things that go against your own morals.

And sometimes that means putting yourself in grave danger.

How far would you go?

WHY THIS BOOK?

This is a deeply-personal story about how we are defined by our past, whether we want to admit that or not. It’s about those experiences that we keep secret from everyone around us, and even bury them so deeply, we believe we can ignore them and move on.

But they never go away.

These secrets scratch away at us at a subconscious level, demanding our attention, but at an unimaginable cost. They come to us in dreams, or show themselves through unconscious behaviours, often when we’re at our weakest and most vulnerable.

For many people, those secrets resurfaced during the COVID lockdowns. With so much uncertainty about the future, it was much easier to look to the past, and re-interpret experiences through rose-tinted glasses.

But not all of those experiences were what we thought they were, and sometimes the ones that that seemed the most joyous, were actually camouflaging forgotten traumas that continue to hold us back.

Only by confronting our past actions, and acknowledging these secrets, can we ever hope to find a peace in the future.

Sometimes these secrets are connected to our friends, who we support and love even when they’re not necessarily doing the right thing or making the right choices. But they’re like family to us, and we can’t turn our backs on them… even when they ask us to do unusual things.

This story examines friendship and secrets, and asks us to examine our relationships with those around us.
